Ancient Church of
San Nicolò di Bari

The construction of the first Church dedicated to San Nicolò di Bari in San Fratello is uncertain. Although the oldest parish documents date back to the 1500s, it is plausible to argue that the initial foundation could be attributed to the time of the construction of the Castle and the new settlement near the Rocca in the early Middle Ages.

Preceded by the construction of an older church dedicated to the Ten Thousand Martyrs, the new archpriest’s church was expanded in 1538, compared to its initial, smaller dimensions.
The new building took the form of a Renaissance Latin cross; the three beautiful naves were marked by eight fine red marble columns, which, in the second half of the 1700s, replaced the older sandstone ones. The magnificent appearance of the temple, enhanced by the preciousness of the interior decorative scheme and the priceless votive and liturgical furnishings, was complemented by the beautiful square adjacent to it, facing west, and the large churchyard, adorned with a local gray marble balustrade, topped by about twenty bust statues of subjects, possibly once identifiable.

Of the entire structure, which in the early 20th century was referred to as the most beautiful temple in the province, only part of the right nave, a section of the transept, the sacristy rooms, and the lower part of the majestic bell tower, built in 1635 or 1605, remain today. In fact, the church was progressively demolished and, in March 1950, was permanently closed to worship.
