Church of
St. Mary of Graces
The Church of Madonna delle Grazie is a jewel of great artistic value for the community of San Fratello. Located at the northern entrance, on a scenic hill supported by a high stone wall, this sacred building seems to welcome travelers with a hospitable greeting—a breath of peace—or to soothe the nostalgia for loved ones left behind.
Built around 1600, its history is steeped in devotion.
Originally, the church was intended as a shelter for the elderly, who found accommodation in the small cells created in the two additional side structures. Later, these spaces probably became the residence of hermits, who led a life of prayer and contemplation there. From the first half of the 20th century, the church served as a branch of the Parish of Maria SS. Assunta for the residents of the neighboring districts. In 1969, it was elevated to the status of a parish church.

The interior is a true masterpiece of late Baroque style; the short nave is enriched by two side altars, dedicated to St. Margaret of Cortona and St. Luigi Gonzaga. In the apse there is a small chapel adorned with golden designs and houses the beautiful nineteenth-century statue, of Neapolitan origin, of the Madonna delle Grazie, particularly venerated by the faithful of San Fratello.

The decorative structure features an elaborate embroidery of marble and stucco, creating a suggestive and solemn atmosphere. Particularly noteworthy and extraordinarily realistic are the six canvases that lead the visitor toward the central altar, depicting with naive and pure representation scenes from the life of the young Mary.
The annual feast of Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated on the liturgical day of the Nativity of Mary, September 8th.
