Historic Former Town Hall
Located in the vibrant heart of San Fratello, the former Town Hall stands imposingly on the historic Piazza Ricca Salerno, a place that has represented the center of community life for centuries. The building, constructed in the years following the devastating landslide of 1922, replaced the previous municipal headquarters and became a symbol of the town's resilience and its ability to recover after natural tragedies. With its post-fascist architecture, the former Town Hall conveys a sense of solidity and continuity, while simultaneously serving as both a historical memory and a distinctive visual element for anyone crossing the square.
In the square, there is also the Monument to the Fallen in War, which honors the people of San Fratello who lost their lives in the wars. With its imposing central statue, this monument reminds everyone of the sacrifice and courage of those who fought for the homeland, making the site a place of reflection and contemplation for the community.
Inside the former Town Hall, the headquarters of the Pro Loco San Fratello APS Tourist Association is located, playing a crucial role in preserving and promoting the rich cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the area. In addition to the Pro Loco's headquarters, the building houses two rooms of significant archaeological interest, where artifacts from ancient Apollonia are displayed. Among these, vases, coins, and fragments of pottery tell the story of a civilization that flourished centuries ago, providing visitors with a tangible insight into the cultural and historical wealth of the region.
The building is also linked to a particularly significant historical moment: in the 1980s, the then Prime Minister Bettino Craxi addressed the crowd gathered in the square below from the balcony of the former Town Hall. This event remains alive in the collective memory of San Fratello, further emphasizing the historical and symbolic importance of this place.
