Monument to the Sanfratellano Horse

We are faced with the monument dedicated to the noble Sanfratellano Horse, a symbol of genetic and cultural prestige for the community of San Fratello and for all of Sicily. This monument celebrates the history and tradition associated with this extraordinary breed of horse, which has its roots in the Nebrodi Mountains and the heart of its inhabitants.
Although the “Equus Sicanus” was already mentioned in ancient times, it was the influence of the Saracens, skilled in horsemanship, and the Normans, led by Adelaide of Vasto, that consolidated this breed during the Middle Ages, a period marked by intense horse trade between Sicily and the mainland.
Another pivotal moment in the island’s history came under the reign of Frederick II of Swabia, whose marriage to Constance of Aragon brought 500 Iberian horses to Sicily. His campaign to control rebellious lands helped spread these noble breeds, which contributed to the evolution of the Sanfratellano horse.

In 1925, to improve the breed, stallions of English and Eastern origin were introduced to correct some perceived defects, such as reduced stature. This breeding program lasted for about ten years but did not alter the fundamental characteristics of the Sanfratellano, which, thanks to its strong genetic foundation, managed to maintain its identity. The natural adaptation to the Nebrodi Mountains and centuries of environmental selection have made the Sanfratellano Horse a unique example in Europe: a breed that still lives freely in its original habitat, with stabilized and distinctive genetic traits.

Every autumn, the Municipality of San Fratello organizes the Sanfratellano Horse Market Exhibition, an event that celebrates this breed and its qualities, while promoting cultural and commercial exchanges related to the equestrian world. During the exhibition, industry experts evaluate the technical characteristics of foals, stallions, and mares, awarding the best specimens. In addition to equine displays, the event also offers tastings of local specialties and conferences on equestrian culture, helping to keep alive the tradition associated with this extraordinary horse.
