Monument to the Centenary of the 1922 Landslide - 1922-2022

This monument, erected to commemorate one of the most dramatic events in the history of San Fratello, represents the memory of a tragedy that profoundly impacted this community, and also reminds us of another similar event that occurred in 2010.

The 1922 landslide was triggered by the erosion of rocks caused by water, which suddenly engulfed much of the town’s buildings, including historically and culturally significant structures such as the Cathedral and the Town Hall. The devastation was such that the first news of the tragedy reached the Ministry of the Interior in Rome via a telegram from Messina, describing an unprecedented emergency situation.

Subsequent communications painted an even graver picture. The landslide, unstoppable in its movement, threatened other parts of the town, forcing the authorities to evacuate the at-risk areas and organize a desperate escape for thousands of inhabitants. In this climate of emergency and despair, the parish priest and the captain of the carabinieri stood out for their courage, saving lives and reducing the number of casualties.

Despite the heroic efforts of the authorities and rescuers, the toll of the tragedy remained heavy: hundreds of homes were destroyed, public buildings collapsed, and numerous lives were lost. Among the most touching stories was that of an elderly woman and her son, who died trying to save her. The devastation also affected historically and culturally significant buildings, such as the villa of General Di Giorgio and that of the former provincial councilor.

Local and national authorities quickly mobilized to provide assistance to the victims and begin rescue and reconstruction operations. The first hours after the tragedy saw the arrival of military and civil authorities, who brought food, materials, and human support to address the emergency. However, the road to recovery would be long and difficult.

The community of San Fratello demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of adversity. Despite the pain and loss, the inhabitants united in solidarity and mutual aid, working together to rebuild their town and resume their lives. Help and support came from all directions, with donations and volunteers joining the reconstruction efforts, witnessing the strength and determination in the face of adversity.

Unfortunately, history repeated itself nearly 88 years later. On February 14, 2010, a new landslide struck San Fratello, plunging the town back into chaos and despair. Intense rainfall had saturated the ground, causing another devastating landslide that swallowed streets and buildings, forcing residents to flee in panic. Once again, the community was forced to evacuate, and once again, it demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of catastrophe.

Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with the provincial Civil Protection and numerous volunteers intervening on-site. Despite the severity of the situation, the community of San Fratello united to face the adversities and attempt to rebuild their lives, keeping the memory of the 1922 tragedy alive and the example of solidarity and determination.
