"The Miracle of Water" – Mural

On the occasion of the Jubilee for the fifth centenary of the birth of Saint Benedict of San Fratello, an evocative depiction adorns the wall of a building facing the Church of the Convent. The artwork recalls an oral tradition deeply rooted in the memory of the local community, linked to a miraculous event that took place during the Saint’s childhood.

According to this ancient account, when Benedict was still a young shepherd in the vast and unspoiled woods of the area, his companions, either out of necessity or as a prank, sent him late in the evening to fetch water from a distant spring. The long distance and the darkness of the path filled him with fear and exhaustion. Then, with deep trust in God, he knelt down and asked the Lord for help. Planting his shepherd's staff into the ground, he caused a fresh water spring to gush forth at that very spot. Returning to his companions much earlier than expected, he left them astonished: everyone knew how far the spring was, and the event was immediately attributed to divine intervention in favor of the young servant of God.

News of the event spread quickly among the inhabitants of San Fratello, who recognized the spring as a gift from their fellow townsman, the saint, and preserved the memory of the event with devotion. This episode, simple yet significant, highlights Saint Benedict’s profound trust in God and connects his humble life to the great biblical narratives, where water often symbolizes God’s providence for His people.
