Historical Pharmacy
Lo Balbo

Located on Via Saverio Latteri in San Fratello, the pharmacy dates back to the early 1900s. It was purchased in 1950 by Dr. Antonino Lo Balbo, who meticulously preserved its furniture and refined wall decorations.

Particular attention should be given to the ceiling, which is divided into four sections, with a floral rosette in the center. In each section, there is a small putto, accompanied by an animal closely linked to the pharmaceutical arts.

The first is a dog, symbolizing loyalty and associated with Saint Roch, the patron saint of those afflicted by plague. The second is a rooster, whose crowing awakens and gives life after a torpid sleep. The third is a serpent, traditionally associated with Aesculapius and a symbol of medicine. The fourth is a tortoise, whose flesh was used to make therapeutic products and which also symbolizes tranquility and longevity. Each section is surrounded by delicate floral decorations, standing out against a deep blue background, creating a chromatic effect.

The ceiling also features a unique fresco. It represents the "birth" of chemistry (which dates back to the Paleolithic with the discovery of fire) and its evolution: from the simple combustion of minerals and plants, tar is extracted, and through chemical reactions, medications like Aspirin in 1853 (analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic) and Phenacetin in 1887 (analgesic and antipyretic) were discovered and synthesized.
